Tens of Thousands of Fish Die in Australia
The majority of deceased fish discovered at Sunset Strip along Lake Menindee's shoreline were native bony bream, accompanied by some carp, media reported.
The catastrophic die-off followed last week's record-shattering temperatures that surged near 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) before plummeting abruptly, creating lethal conditions for aquatic life in the inland waterway system.
Local resident Darryn Clifton stumbled upon the mass mortality event Monday while preparing to fish in the area.
"I was shocked -- but given the temperatures, the bony bream are the first to suffer," he said.
The Barkandji River Rangers, tasked with monitoring the lake system, verified that hundreds of dead fish had already been extracted from surrounding waterways in cleanup operations.
Authorities have identified the extreme heat as the primary driver behind the mass fish kill.
Australia faces mounting consequences from climate change, confronting escalating dangers from bushfires and severe weather phenomena that threaten human lives, property, economic stability, and ecological systems, a NSW government report states.
The World Economic Forum issued a stark warning in its most recent assessment, projecting that rising sea levels could endanger 1.5 million Australians by 2050, while extreme weather events including heatwaves, floods, and bushfires pose nationwide risks.
